"More commonly, the tortures [in the early church] resemble sacrificial prodedures: human beings were flayed and dismembered and burned like aimals offered to the gods. One way or another, the Romans said, Christians would offer to the gods" (Leithard, Defending Constantine, 24-5).

Quotation Friday: Sacrificing to the Gods
"More commonly, the tortures [in the early church] resemble sacrificial prodedures: human beings were flayed and dismembered and burned like aimals offered to the gods. One way or another, the Romans said, Christians would offer to the gods" (Leithard, Defending Constantine, 24-5).

When I read about our early brothers and sisters being flayed and tortured, I am always vexed, and even cringe, and think, 'What would I do if I was being skinned alive, or if they sliced my tongue in half, or dislocated every joint in my body, to get me to deny Christ?
That's for the reflective quote Jonathan.
"Let us beware of murmuring under affliction. We may be sure there is a needs-be for every cross, and a wise reason for every trial. Every sickness and sorrow is a gracious message from God, and is meant to call us nearer to Him. Let us pray that we may learn the lesson that each affliction is appointed to convey. Let us see that we "refuse not Him that speaketh."-JC Ryle
