Quotation Friday: Is Hell Biblical?

"It is doubtful that there is a doctrine in the Bible easier to prove than that of eternal punishment (cf. Matt. 25:46)."
-S. Lewis Johnson

You can find numberous S. Lewis Johnson sermons, etc. at The SLJ Institute. I have heard many very influential pastors and theologians say that Johnson was the best expositor of his generation. Listen to him.

You may also access an entire TMSJ (The Master's Seminary Journal) journal devoted to the debate over hell: Hell: Never, Forever, or Just for Awhile?

SLJ has shaped my thinking on a number of Biblical and theological topics. He is one of the finest scholar-pastors of the 20th century. His ability to interweave and synthesize exegesis with theology is masterful and few do it as well. He is also well versed in Church History.

I have to disagree

From memory, Solomon says in Ecclesiastes the dead have no thoughts, no experiences etc at all, their dead...

Their are similar statements in the psalms

This makes sense when Jesus resurrected the child, said she was sleeping

Thanks for the links to Lewis Johnson.

Here's a quote that hit me as I skimmed through someof his teachings: "The only one who really understands man is God. That is also why psychology cannot be realistic or accurate unless it takes into account what we read in the scriptures about man. A psychology or a psychiatry that does not begin with what God reveals to us about man is bound to go astray."

Yes, I think it is impossible to deny that everlasting punishment is biblical.

But I think it is unfortunate that many conservative Christians are too quick to gloss over the theological problems presented by everlasting punishment.

This is a difficult subject.

Matthew, theological problems? I would say to the contrary that many evangelicals have never thought about the God glorifying nature of an eternal hell.

Quotes, are you arguing for soul sleep or annihilationism?
